Nautical Archaeology Society Courses in 2022 at ICUA Zadar
In 2020 ICUA Zadar in cooperation with Nautical Archaeology Society (NAS) will continue to organize NAS courses. NAS courses aim to provide not just an introduction to the underwater archaeology, but also offer people a chance to build their skills and experience, allowing them to take part in projects and fieldwork around the world and perhaps to run their own projects.
The ICUA Team will conduct NAS courses during 2022 in the vicinity of Rovinj in Istria County. Theoretical lectures and practical exercises will be conducted at the diving club “KPA – CAS Rovinj - Rovigno” which is situated near Rovinj city centar.
Timetable:
- Introduction to Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology - 28th September 2022
- Part I Certificate in Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology - 29th - 30th September 2022
- Part II - practical underwater work to obtain data for writing Final report will be conducted in term from 27th to 30th September 2022 in roman period shipwreck site at Sestrice islet.

Introduction to foreshore and underwater archaeology course will consist of theoretical lectures - Site types and dating methods, Underwater finds, 2D survey and a practical session - drawing on land and underwater (one dive).
Part I certificate in foreshore and underwater archaeology course will consist of theoretical lectures - Carrying out an archaeological project, Locating and exploring a site, Project safety and logistics, 3D survey, Dealing with finds, Post field activity and practical sessions - getting to know a site and recording a site (two dives).

The price of the course is HRK 750,00 (EUR 100,00)
Courses requirements:
The requirements for the Introduction to Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology and for Part I Certificate in Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology are certificate Open Water Diver (OWD), CMAS* or an equivalent diving certificate and medical certificate ensuring fitness for diving. Participants will have to present diving insurance upon getting official information for acceptance to the course.
Course fee includes:
- NAS training record card
- printed materials for different course modules
- renting and filling of diving air tanks during the course
- magazine Submerged Heritage
- one year free NAS membership
Participants should provide personal diving equipment or they can rent it at a local diving center (expenses not covered by the organizers). The organizers will cover the costs of renting and filling diving air tanks during the course.
Participants should arrange transportation to Rovinj by themselves at their own expense. The organizers reserve the right to change the location of the course lectures in Rovinj area.
Participants should arrange accommodation during the courses by themselves at their own expense.
The number of participants for each course is limited, so send in your applications as soon as possible!
The course will be held in English if English speakers apply.
Deadline for submission of the documents is September 2nd 2022. All applicants will be informed about acceptance by September 5th 2022.
