Underwater excavation of the remains of ancient shipwreck near the islands Babuljaš
During May 2014 employees of the International Centre for Underwater Archaeology continued last year's excavations at the site of ancient shipwreck in the waters off the island Babuljaš near Pakoštane. In the period from 12th to 23rd May five quadrants have been excavated, which makes surface of 36 m2 excavated in the last two years. Many interesting finds emerged from this area. The ship carried the cargo of olive oil amphorae and a great amount of fine ware which origin mostly from the territory of North Africa. Different types of amphorae from North Africa and Eastern Mediterranean, relief decorated bowl and different types of African red slip and cooking ware, which can be dated to the period during the 5th century, confirmed that this is a very interesting site with great potential. Excavations were conducted under the financial support of the Municipal Tourism Office in Pakoštane, with the support of Han - Vrana agency. Great help in underwater research and documentation of findings were experienced underwater archaeologists - volunteers from Montenegro, Germany, USA and Croatia who participated in this year's excavations.
