Third campaign of research in the Bay of Veštar near Rovinj

International Centre for Underwater Archaeology has organized international underwater archaeological research in a period from 18.4. to 29.4.2011.g. in the Bay of Veštar near Rovinj. This is a third year of research in cooperation with Bavarian Society for Underwater Archaeology (Bayerischen Gesellschaft für Unterwasserarchäologie), Croatian Conservation Institute and the Heritage Museum of Rovinj, involving over 14 participants most of whom are divers. A significant late antique settlement Vistrum was situated in the bay of Veštar. The excavation trenches are positioned around early roman pier on the southern coast of the bay. This ancient pier is up to now the largest known in Istria. This year excavation of two trenches that reached a depth of layers up to two meters were finally completed. A multitude of Roman, medieval and post medieval finds were found.
