Second Meeting of State Parties to the UNESCO Convention
Second Meeting of States Parties to the Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage held in Paris
The second session of the Meeting of States Parties to the Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage opened at UNESCO headquarters in Paris on December 1st, 2009. The meeting was opened by UNESCO Assistant Director-General Françoise Riviere, after which UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova addressed the meeting by video message. To date the convention has been signed by 26 counties. As a signatory state to the Convention, Croatia was represented at the meeting by Jasen Mesić, the Director of the Directorate for Archive and Archaeology at the Ministry of Culture, Jasna Mileta, Minister Counsellor at the Croatian Embassy in Paris, by and Mladen Pešić an archaeologist with the Croatian Conservation Institute. At the proposal of the Slovenian representative Croatia was chosen to preside the second meeting of the state parties to the convention, with Jasen Mesić acting as the chairperson. The meeting also elected 11 members to the Scientific and Technical Advisory Body, including Jasen Mesić as the Croatian representative. It is the mission of this body to assist and advise the Meeting of the State Parties to the Convention by providing expert counsel in questions pertaining to activities related to underwater cultural heritage, to promote the best examples of the protection of underwater cultural heritage and to cooperate with non-governmental organisations active in areas related to the Convention's guidelines. The second session of the Meeting of States Parties to the Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage was closed on December 2nd, and it was decided that the following, third session would be held at UNESCO headquarters in the first quarter of 2011.
