Regional Meeting On The Protection Of The Underwater Cultural Heritage was held in Istanbul

Regional Meeting on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage, was organized by UNESCO Headquarters and the UNESCO Beirut office in cooperation with the Agency of Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture in Istanbul, Turkey, from 25 to 27 October 2010. Theme of the gathering was the presentation of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage, the presentation of various centers specializing in this area as well as a separate national reports on the state of the legal and practical protection. The meeting was attended by around fifty people from around twenty countries. At the meeting a presentation of the International Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar, and a report on the legal and practical state of protection of underwater cultural heritage in Croatia was presented. At a roundtable at the end of the meeting, participants discussed the further ratification and implementation of this Convention and the potential dangers for underwater heritage. Common "Recommendations" are adopted which will be published after revision in the participants states.
