International Symposium on Boat and Ship Archaeology - ISBSA16

Zadar is the host of the International Symposium on Boat and Ship Archaeology - ISBSA16 which will be held from 26 to 1 October 2021.

It is an event that brings together world-renowned experts in the field of maritime history, ethnology and archaeology of the ship. Since 1976, ISBSA has traditionally served as a platform to publicise recent ship finds and new nautical material, and to outline the results of ship-related archaeological, historical and techincal resarach.

The event is organized by the University of Zadar, International Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar, Archaeological Museum in Zadar, Museum of Ancient Glass in Zadar and cities Zadar and Šibenik.
The Conference was opened in the Ceremonial Hall of the University of Zadar, on Monday September 27, 2021 when participants were greeted by the Vice Rector for Development Strategy and Publishing of the University of Zadar Professor Josip Faričić, Director of the International Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar Mr. Mladen Pešić, Director of the Archaeological Museum Zadar Mr. Jakov Vučić and the Head of the Administrative Department for Culture and Sports of the City Ms. Dina Bušić, on behalf of the Mayor of the City of Zadar.
Presentations include topics about recent discoveries, maritime ethnology, experimental archaeology of the ship and research methods and the programme will be held at the University of Zadar Ceremonial Hall, Croatian National Theater in Zadar and in the Incubator for New Technologies Trokut in Šibenik. The thematic title of the international conference ISBSA16 is Sailing through history: Reading the past - Imagining the future and it will be focused on reviewing the use of 3D technologies in the documentation and interpretation of ships at archaeological sites.

The conference will provide joint events for a wider audience in addition to presentations by distinguished experts. The Museum of Ancient Glass in Zadar opened an exhibition called Sailing the Sea: Adriatic Traditional Ships and Boats by Lucian Keber on Monday, September 27, 2021. A public lecture by an archaeologist Bridget Buxton Titanic in 2021 will be held on Tuesday, September 28, 2021 at 20:00 at the Ceremonial Hall of the University of Zadar, and a festival of traditional ships in the city port on September 30 and October 1, 2021.

The conference is financialy supported by the Croatian Ministry of Culture and Media, Croatian Science Foundation (Numerical Reconstruction in Maritime Archaeology project),Croatian National Theater Zadar, Digital Media Studio Novena, Šibenik City Museum, Terra Travel Agency, Šibenik Fortress, Diving Center Foka and Institute for Maritime Heritage ARS NAUTICA.
