International conference "Maritime Renaissance - Renaissance trade routes in the Adriatic and their connections with European countries", ICUA Zadar, Zadar, November 11 – 13, 2025

International Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar is hosting a conference titled Maritime Renaissance - Renaissance trade routes in the Adriatic and their connections with European countries, scheduled to take place from November 11 to 13, 2025, at the St. Nicholas Education and Presentation Centre for Underwater Archaeology.

The primary topics will cover new discoveries of sinking ships and their cargo, ports and harbour villages which testify the great progress of maritime trade. Recent researches show that the period from 16th to 18th century is a time of great resurgence in the navigation directions through which the transport of more diverse commodities begun. Underwater archaeologists, as well as historians, will present their new discoveries and ideas about the traces of international trade that crossed on important shipping routes in our part of the Adriatic, but they will also talk about international trade and maritime connections between the Mediterranean, the North Sea, the Baltic, the Black Sea and the Atlantic.

The scientific conference was organized with funding from the Ministry of Culture and Media, along with additional support from the Central European Initiative, the oldest and largest regional forum of its kind in Central and Eastern Europe.

Apart from Croatian experts from the Department of Underwater Archaeology of the Croatian Conservation Institute, Lošinj Museum, University of Zadar and ICUA Zadar, all lecturers have received personal invitations. 

Experts from Italy, Slovenia, Montenegro, Spain, Portugal, UK, Sweden, Netherlands, Poland and Bulgaria have confirmed their participation. The conference will be open to the public.

Poster presentation applications are now being accepted. The number of poster is limited, and the deadline for applications is June 13, 2025.
