Continued underwater research at Ližnjan
During the two weeks from the 14. to 27.9.2014., underwater archaeological excavations of the ancient shipwrecks on Cape Uljeva were resumed. One Roman ship sank on dangerous cliffs during the 1st century BC, and the other in the 4th century. Ships were carrying wine and other products in amphorae for trade purposes, but other types of pottery and glass vessels were also found. This year, the Slovenian Harpha Sea team made precise multibeam bathymetric map of these sites. The research is led by the ICUA Zadar through the program on protection the cultural heritage of the Ministry of Culture of Croatia, but with the precious help of the local community, the Tourist Office of Ližnjan. During this research, the third international UNESCO/ICUA underwater archeology school was held. Courses were attended by seven students and young archaeologists from sixcountries, and in addition to theoretical lectures they were involved in the practical exercises on the actual shipwrecks.
