Beginner level underwater archaeology course held in Pakoštane
The International Centre for Underwater Archaeology (ICUA), a UNESCO category II centre, organised a two-week beginner level training course in diving and underwater archaeology. The courses were held in Zadar and Pakoštane, from 30 May to 11 June 2011 and were organised with the support of the UNESCO office in Venice. During the first week the young archaeologists from Southeastern European countries had an opportunity to learn the basics of diving or to improve their diving skills in line with the requirements of the Scuba Schools International (SSI) system, under the guidance of experienced instructor Nenad Starčić.
Week two of the underwater archaeology course consisted of theoretical and practical instruction in the basic techniques of underwater archaeological excavation and was held in its entirety in the English language. Archaeologists at ICUA Zadar (Luka Bekić MSc, Mladen Pešić) and the University of Zadar (assistant professor Mato Ilkić DSc, Mate Parica) and outside associates (Roman Scholz, Nenad Starčić and Borna Krstulović) held theoretical instruction at the ICUA Zadar lecture hall. Practical instruction was held in the frame of the archaeological research of the Roman harbour in Pakoštane in order to provide the participants with the best possible knowledge of basic research techniques. Seven candidates from Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania and Slovenia successfully completed the course. The cost of participation, board and lodging for participants, instruction activities and the use of diving equipment during the course were covered by ICUA Zadar. Thanks to this intensive course the participants will have greater confidence in undertaking the protection of underwater cultural heritage in their own countries.
