Training in Underwater Archaeology and Digitalization of Underwater Heritage in Ulcinj, Montenegro, April 7–11, 2025

ICUA Zadar organized a five-day training program on underwater archaeology and the digitalization of underwater cultural heritage, held in Ulcinj, Montenegro, from April 7 to 11, 2025.
Initiated by Mr. Darko Kovačević, the Head of the Laboratory for Maritime Archaeology at the Faculty of Maritime Studies in Kotor, University of Montenegro, the course was conducted under the auspices of UNESCO and the UNITWIN Network for Underwater Archaeology. Its funding was supported by the Interreg IPA South Adriatic cross-border cooperation program involving Italy, Albania, and Montenegro, as part of the comprehensive Wrecks4All 2.0 initiative.
The training gathered 21 participants from Montenegro and Albania, who had the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills in the field of underwater archaeology. The program included both theoretical lectures and hands-on exercises, with special emphasis on the application of digital technologies for documenting underwater sites. Participants were introduced to the basics of underwater archaeology and heritage management, as well as the use of photogrammetry to create accurate 3D models of underwater sites for research, monitoring, and conservation purposes. The course was delivered in English.
The expert team from ICUA Zadar conducted a series of lectures and led practical fieldwork, reaffirming the Centre’s role as one of the leading institutions in underwater archaeology in Croatia, Europe, and globally. Radio Televizija Crne Gore, the national broadcaster, documented the training activities in Ulcinj as part of its ongoing work to produce a documentary film about the course.
