Polish underwater archaeologists visiting ICUA Zadar
The return visit of underwater archaeologists from the National Maritime Museum in Gdansk took place from May 22 to 26. The cooperation is based on the project "Polish-Croatian exchange of experiences within the framework of the UNESCO 2001 Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage" and the Partnership Agreement signed by ICUA Zadar and the National Maritime Museum in Gdańsk in 2022. The project is co-financed by the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage under the “Inspiring Culture” program. The cooperation made it possible to exchange experiences and open perspectives for future cooperation in the field of underwater archaeology.
On this occasion, together with our Polish colleagues, we were diving at the Roman pier in Kumenat Bay next to Biograd na Moru. We examined the wreckage of the Ju-87 Stuka and the remains of the Roman shipwreck in the seabed of the island of Žirje. It was a unique adventure to explore the imposing shipwreck with amphorae near Cape Letavica in Šimuni on the island of Pag. On Thursday, in the classroom of ICUA Zadar, Polish colleagues held a public lecture entitled "Underwater archaeology in the National Maritime Museum in Gdańsk - recent research". On the last day, we sailed to Zapuntel on the island of Molat, where we dived at the ancient anchorage, and then we concluded a dynamic week with brainstorming and socializing on the island of Ist.
