Archaeological research in the waters of the peninsula Vižula near MedulinArchaeological excavations of remains of the ancient villa and docks at the peninsula Vižula in Medulin Bay have just finished. Underwater research was lead by Igor Miholjek from the Department of Underwater Archaeology of the Croatian Conservation Institute with participation of the International Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar. These investigations have been going on for years, and their goal is to document the Roman architecture and other finds that are now submerged at depths up to several meters. As the roman residence situated on Vižula one of the largest and wealthiest in Istria, there are several major components of walls and piers at peninsula which need to be documented and surveyed, because the walls are endangered by constant action of waves. In addition to the previously known port on the western part of the peninsula, this year interesting building structures in the length of several hundred meters under the sea north of the peninsula were recorded and partially investigated. It is assumed that the structure could be a kind of aqueduct. Research will be continued next year.
