Advanced Course on Conservation and Restoration is successfully completed
The Advanced course for the restoration and conservation of underwater archaeological finds was held in Zadar in the period from 26.09.2011 to 24.12.2011. The course was organized by the International Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar, with support from the UNESCO office in Venice. Advanced three-month course was attended by six participants from Southeast Europe and the Mediterranean (Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Spain, and Croatia) and two participants from Mexico and Namibia. All participants passed the practical part of the course, which lasted for four weeks in each of the specialized workshops: for metal, ceramic/glass and organic material. |

International Scientific Colloquium and a Regional Meeting in the organization of UNESCO was held in Brussels
On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage UNESCO has organized a Scientific Colloquium on the factors impacting underwater heritage. Besides the Colloquium a Regional Meeting of the EU states and EU candidate states on the state of the underwater heritage and a Convention was held on the last day. |

A protective cage on the archaeological site near the bay Koromašna off the island Žirje was replaced
After almost 14 years of protecting a number of ancient amphorae off the island Žirje, overgrown old cage was damaged by the action of the sea. A new cage measuring 17 x 9 meters was installed these days at the Roman shipwreck with a cargo of about a hundred amphorae. This cage with a stronger frame and of better materials is technically more advanced than its predecessors. The lifetime of this cage on the sea bottom is predicted in a range of 20 to 30 years. |

This year's underwater reconnaissance Istrian coastline completed
During April, June and November 2011 members of the International Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar, under the leadership of Luka Bekić in collaboration with freelance divers have completed this year's underwater reconnaissance in the county. The goal of reconnaissance, in the program funded by the Ministry of Culture, was an overview of the known underwater sites, and checking of the potential new sites according to reports of the divers. During a total of four weeks the team surveyed at several positions. |

New research of Suleyman Bridge in Darda
After a two-year hiatus, during October 2011 Croatian Conservation Institute and the International Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar teamed up and continued underwater archaeological research on the part of Suleiman's bridge in the pond named Mala Đola in Darda. During this campaign the main goal was a sampling of timber piles (bridge piles) for dendrochronological analysis. Suleiman's bridge was built in 1566 and finally destroyed in 1686 during which period several renovations were made. With the help of accurate dating of wood samples, we could find out when the renovations were exactly done. |

Lectures on irradiation methods in conservation held in ICUA Zadar
Ruđer Bošković Institute, Croatian Conservation Institute and International Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar organized a series of lectures on "Irradiation Methods In The Protection Of Cultural Heritage", on Oct 6th 2011 in lecture hall of ICUA Zadar. Lectures are a continuation to the seminar in Zagreb (Oct 4th and 5th 2011), and are part of a technical cooperation project with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) TC Project RER/8/015: "Using Nuclear Techniques for the Characterization and Preservation of Cultural Heritage Artifacts in the European Region". |
