Call for Applications: Basic Underwater Archaeology Course 2012 (Deadline: 15 May 2012)
The International Centre on Underwater Archaeology Zadar (ICUA) is organizing a 2-week basic training course on underwater archaeology, due to take place in Zadar, Croatia, on 4 – 15 June 2012. The course is organized with the support of the UNESCO Venice Office. The deadline for application is 15 May 2012, by 12 am. The course will consist of theoretical and practical (hands on) instruction in the basic techniques of underwater archaeological excavation. Archaeologists from ICUA and the University of Zadar will conduct theoretical lessons, complemented by courses in diving and specialty diving according to the requirements of the Scuba Schools International (SSI) system. Practical instruction will take place in the frame of archaeological researches in the Zadar environs, in order to allow the participants acquire the best possible knowledge of basic research techniques. The course’s expected beneficiaries are archaeologists who have no or scarce diving experience, as well as experts in different disciplines (conservators, geologists, marine biologists, etc) who are interested in developing multidisciplinary skills and participation in underwater archaeology researches. Participation costs, intended board and lodging for the participants, plus teaching activities and use of diving equipment during the course, will be covered by the organisers. Participants will be admitted to the study programme based on the specific requirements that apply. |

Advanced course on the restoration and conservation of underwater archaeological finds
The International Centre on Underwater Archaeology (ICUA) is organising a 3-month advanced training course on the restoration and conservation of underwater archaeological finds, due to take place in Zadar, Croatia, from 26.09.2011 to 24.12.2011. The course is organised with the support of the UNESCO Office in Venice. This international course is targeted to the practical and theoretical training of candidates for independent work in the restoration and conservation of underwater archaeological finds. In addition to a theoretical introduction, providing insight into the issues of archaeology, underwater archaeology, restoration and conservation, candidates will be also taught specific elements related to the preservation of underwater cultural objects, such as in-situ conservation of features, the administration of archaeological sites and the handling of finds. Besides the theoretical segment, most of the lessons will consist in mentored practical work at the workshops of the Croatian Conservation Institute (HRZ) in Zadar. Candidates will work with various materials and will be required to complete three main workshops, respectively focused on metal, pottery, and organic finds. Lectures will be given by staff members of the HRZ and ICUA Zadar, faculty members of the University of Zadar, and guest lecturers from foreign institutions. The production of a manual for the course programme is underway, for which the special approval of UNESCO will be sought. At the end of the course candidates will take an exam in the theoretical and practical segments, after which they will be entitled to a certificate confirming that they have passed our Centre's course for specialized conservators/restorers of underwater archaeological finds. The course will run for three calendar months. |

International Congress on Underwater Archaeology IKUWA 4
During September and October of 2011 (29.09. - 02.10.2011) Zadar will play host to the fourth international congress on underwater archaeology (IKUWA 4), to be held under the theme title "Managing the Underwater Cultural Heritage". With the support of UNESCO the congress will be organised by the Croatian Ministry of Culture, the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sport, the County of Zadar, the City of Zadar, the University of Zadar, the City of Nin, Archaeological Museum of Zadar and the International Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar. |

as the implementation of the Declaration from the Ministerial Conference A Bridge Towards a Shared Future held in Zadar in 2007.The Seminar is dedicated to the establishment of the International Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar as an independent institution responsible for the protection of underwater heritage in the Adriatic and Mediterranean. The founder of the ICUA is the Republic of Croatia, and the Centre will operate under the auspices of UNESCO, as a regional Category II Centre. |
